Dachshunds - Breeders - What Determines a Responsible Breeder

The Dachshund dog breeders are responsible for producing healthy litters that will not appear unwanted once they are born or later on. Long before the pregnancy period, the breeding program should be aiming at high quality Dachshunds. A responsible breeder will not mate the dogs whose health or temperament seems to be questionable.

Both sire and dam should reach the appropriate age for breeding (2 years of age in sires and 1 year in dams). In order to produce healthy litters, you must take care of the parents. Breeding female Dachshunds more than once a year is unreasonable and dangerous. The dam should be given time to recover.

The dogs bred should be registered and be as close to the Dachshund standard as possible. The pedigree is to include champion Dachshunds.

Responsible breeders are aware of the possible problems their dogs might encounter. There is nothing the breeders don't know about the gestation period and whelping.

Responsible breeders plan future owners of the puppies beforehand. Some breeders know who will own their purebred puppies even before the sire is actually pregnant. Having sold the puppies, responsible breeders will be interested in their futures. If some circumstances change and the owners can no longer care for the dog, the breeder will be willing to take it back. Before buying Dachshunds, you will be asked to ensure this possibility in writing.
