Dachshunds - Breeders - General Description
Dachshunds are smart dogs whose most distinguishing traits are independence, intelligence, devotion to the owner, high trainability, friendliness and dignity. It is amazing how the Dachshund combines comic and serious sides of its nature and makes both people and dogs respect it.
The Dachshund can be smooth, longhaired or wirehaired. Smooth Dachshunds should have short shiny coat of red or cream colors, if they are one-colored. Two-colored smooth Dachshunds can be black, chocolate, and gray and fawn with tan markings. The longhaired Dachshund's coat is glossy and a little wavy. It is normally longer under the neck and on the fore-chest. A thick, rough and rather hard coat is characteristic of the wirehaired Dachshund dog. The nose and the nails are preferably black in all types.
The standard Dachshund weighs between 16 and 32 pounds. The miniature Dachshund weighs about 9 pounds. According to the standard, the desirable height is 14-18 inches in standard Dachshunds and around 14 inches in miniature type. Dachshunds - Breeders - Health
Dachshunds are generally healthy. However, due to their elongated body some of them tend to have back problems. If the Dachshund stopped finding pleasure in jumping on and from the sofa and doesn't want to race upstairs at top speed any more, it is a sign that intervertebral disk disease (IVD) could have developed. It is a fact that the spinal cord is an extremely sensitive part of the nervous system. If damaged, it can result in paralysis of the rear legs in Dachshunds.
Other diseases that can affect Dachshunds are urinary stones, low thyroid, vision and hearing problems and heart disease. However, all dog breeds can be prone to some of these ailments. Dachshund dogs are not hard to handle in terms of health.
Dachshunds - Breeders - Grooming Needs
Dachshunds are for people who can't afford a high maintenance dog breed. The Dachshund's coat sheds moderately and often needs only regular brushing and checking for ticks and fleas. Like any dog, your Dachshund will appreciate if you feed it with fresh foods, clean its teeth and clip its nails when necessary. Longhaired Dachshunds may need more maintenance. Nevertheless, Dachshunds are said to be devoid of unpleasant "dog odor" and are seldom known to give their owners grooming troubles.
