Dachshund Puppy

When making a decision about purchasing a Dachshund puppy, you have to be well informed about the typical characteristics of the breed. It’s very important to know why you need a dog and why you need a Dachshund, and not any other breed. Feeling an attraction for a breed in general is not enough for making a decision on obtaining a pet of this breed. To become a good owner you have to understand the typical breed’s personality and basic needs.

The Dachshund comes in three coat varieties and two size varieties. There are smooth-coats, long-coats, and wire-haired Dachshunds; standard and miniature Dachshunds. In Europe, toy variety is also recognized, but the AKC doesn’t register toy Dachshunds. Prior to buying a purebred Dachshund puppy, think twice about what kind of a dog you need. Smooth-coats are the easiest to maintain, but the long-hairs are calmer. The choice of the breed type depends on the lifestyle of the family and the purpose of the dog. If you plan to use your Dachshund for its original purpose, obtain a smooth coated variety, as it displays the best working characteristics.

Developed for hunting, the Dachshund is a very intelligent and independent dog. It makes them trustworthy and reliable pets, but presents a challenge for their owners. When buying a Dachshund puppy, keep in mind that a common lifespan of this breed is up to 15 years, and for most of their lives, Dachshunds are very active, playful and communicative. They don’t like to be left alone and need interaction with the whole family. A commitment of buying a Dachshund puppy also involves providing it with high quality food and vet help when necessary.

There are no ideal dog breeds that suit any household. Dachshund dogs may suit well some families and be uncontrollable monsters in others. When the owner finds out that he/she is not the Dachshund-type person, the dog is usually surrendered to the rescue. To avoid such an unpleasant situation, talk to other Dachshund owners about the personality and typical problems with these dogs. Don’t obtain a Dachshund puppy, if you have no time for housebreaking it or cannot show a dominating dog who the boss is.
