Dachshund Picture
A single look at a Dachshund picture is enough to recognize a dog of this breed. Because of its strange exaggerated appearance with a long body and short legs, this breed has a lot of nicknames: sausage dog in the UK and Australia, Winnie dog and hotdog in the USA, and bassotto in Italy. The breed originated in Germany. In German, the name of the breed means “badger dog.” The Dachshund belongs to the Hound group of breeds, but the appearance and behavior of present day Dachshunds is more similar to Terriers. Though developed for hunting badgers and other burrow-dwelling animals, today Dachshunds are used mostly as pets.
In Dachshund picture galleries, you can see dogs of three coat types. The Dachshund comes in smooth, long or wire coats. Wire-haired Dachshunds are very rare. Often, such dogs are mistaken for other breeds. A wire coat was only recently added to the breed standard. Smooth-coated dogs are common in this breed. Such coat allows Dachshunds perform their original task. Long-coated dogs could not dig into burrows, but could be used for hunting birds. Long-coated Dachshunds are believed to be calmer and easier to train than other coat varieties.
Dachshund picture galleries also feature three size varieties of the breed. The standard and miniature varieties are recognized universally, but a toy or kanichen variety is registered by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) and some other non-English-speaking clubs. Standard Dachshunds average 7 to 13 kg in weight; miniature dogs weigh under 5 kg; toy Dachshunds weigh 3.5 to 4.5 kg. Smaller dogs differ from the full-size variety only by size. They have the same body structure, coat types, and personality.
This breed comes in a variety of coat colors and patterns. Dachshunds can be solid colored, spotted or dappled, two-colored, piebald, sable, and brindle. The most common colors in Dachshunds are red, black, tan, chocolate, fawn, and cream. Two-colored dogs have tan markings typical of hounds: over the eyes, on the ears, on paws, and tail. Solid chocolate and black Dachshunds are disqualified from conformation competitions. A variety of coat colors is accepted in this breed. In Dachshund picture galleries, you can even see dogs with eyes of different colors.
