Dachshund Photo

A single Dachshund photo is enough to recognize a dog of this breed. The Dachshund is the only breed with an elongated body and very short legs. The unusual appearance of these dogs appeared as an adaptation to their original task – hunting badgers. During the hunt, Dachshunds have to follow badgers to their narrow burrows and fight there. Shortened legs of the Dachshund are used to dig the prey out; smooth coat and slender body allow moving in narrow tunnels; the elongated chest acts like a keel and allows the dog resting on it.

While standard Dachshunds were developed for hunting larger game, smaller varieties were bred to hunt stoat and hare. All Dachshunds are difficult to housebreak and train compared to other breeds. They need a special approach and a firm master who can become a “pack leader” for an intelligent and independent dog.
