Dachshund Photo

A single Dachshund photo is enough to recognize a dog of this breed. The Dachshund is the only breed with an elongated body and very short legs. The unusual appearance of these dogs appeared as an adaptation to their original task – hunting badgers. During the hunt, Dachshunds have to follow badgers to their narrow burrows and fight there. Shortened legs of the Dachshund are used to dig the prey out; smooth coat and slender body allow moving in narrow tunnels; the elongated chest acts like a keel and allows the dog resting on it.

Dachshund photo galleries feature several size varieties of the breed: standard, miniature, and toy. While standard Dachshunds were developed for hunting larger game, smaller varieties were bred to hunt stoat and hare. Smaller Dachshunds have many terrier characteristics: they are very agile, courageous, communicative, and energetic.

Dachshund dogs are very versatile. In Dachshund photo galleries, you can see these dogs competing in conformation and field trials, guarding the house, playing with children, and performing tricks. These dogs are not suited to any family. Though they can be kept indoors and do well without a yard, they require much exercise. A Dachshund needs long daily walks and vigorous exercises in the park or other safe areas where they can run and play without a leash. An average life expectancy for this breed is 12-15 years. Dachshunds retain their activity level well into their teens.

There are several types of Dachshunds. They come in three size varieties (standard, miniature, and toy) and three coat varieties (smooth-coats, long-coats, and wire-coats.) The choice of the breed type depends on the owner’s needs and preferences. Toy Dachshunds are not registered by the AKC and cannot compete in conformation. They can be kept as pets only. Long-coated Dachshunds are reported to be calmer than other varieties. Wire-haired Dachshunds are very rare and often mistaken for other breeds. All Dachshunds are difficult to housebreak and train compared to other breeds. They need a special approach and a firm master who can become a “pack leader” for an intelligent and independent dog. Feeling an attraction for the breed after seeing Dachshund photo galleries is not enough for making a decision on obtaining a pet of this breed.
